EU Travel

The EU treats commercial and non commercial pet movements differently, and has separate rules for travel within the EU (Pet Passport) and from non EU countries (health certificates and identification). Check the current requirements for your route.

Preparing for the Journey

• Get your pet used to the crate: introduce it weeks or months before you travel. Pets settle well in a crate they know.
• Check the doors: make sure all locks work and the door mesh is firmly fixed so your pet cannot push or chew through it.
• Health certificate: most airlines need one, whether your pet travels in the cabin or as cargo.
• Cabin or hold: only small dogs and cats can travel in the cabin. Others travel in a heated, ventilated hold, which is often quieter and darker.
• Talk to the airline: confirm they will take your pet on your chosen flight, and reconfirm at least 48 hours before departure.
• Check in timing: in the cabin, check in as late as allowed; in the hold, check in early so your pet can settle somewhere quiet.
• Food and water: reduce food the day before but give enough water. Walk your dog before leaving home and again before check in. A light meal 2 hours before handing your pet over can help it stay calm.
• Air freight: check the airline's freight facility will be open for collection, and travel on weekdays where possible.
• Snub nosed breeds: flying boxers, pugs, bulldogs and Pekingese in hot weather is not recommended, as they struggle to control their body temperature.
