Juveniles are largely carnivorous and need feeding daily, with a protein-heavy diet supporting rapid growth. Adults become progressively more herbivorous and do better fed every other day, with leafy greens and aquatic plants making up a growing share. Continuing to feed an adult like a juvenile leads to overgrowth, shell pyramiding and obesity, all of which are avoidable and none of which reverse.
Calcium is the other essential. Provide a cuttlebone in the water for the turtle to rasp at as it chooses, and use calcium-supplemented foods where appropriate. Feed in a separate container if you can, which keeps the main tank considerably cleaner and makes it obvious how much is actually being eaten.
