The key with any deterrent is consistency rather than strength. Most work by making a spot unpleasant or unfamiliar rather than by being unpleasant enough to shock, so they need reapplying after rain and topping up over a few weeks until the animal's habit breaks. Combining a deterrent with a physical barrier or an alternative attraction, like a designated digging patch, works considerably better than either on its own.
Always check the label for which species a product is safe around before use, particularly indoors. Some deterrents formulated for use around dogs are not suitable near cats or small pets, and a few plant-derived oils are more irritating to cats than the packaging suggests.
